Dynamic spin polarization in quantum dots and organic semiconductors

Abstract:
A new mechanism of electron spin polarization in non-magnetic materials is discussed. The polarization appears due to the interplay of exchange interaction, hyperfine interaction of electron and nuclear spins, non-equilibrium conditions (either electrical current or light absorption) and small magnetic field required to break time-reversal symmetry. It is called dynamic polarization. In contrast to static polarization, it does not require Zeeman energy to be comparable with temperature. Also, it does not depend on the polarization of absorbed light and, in contrast to spin-orbit torque, is not controlled by spin-orbit interaction. This kind of polarization was recently observed in GaAs-AlGaAs quantum dots and predicted for organic semiconductors.
