How to fix a quantum computer?

Abstract:

Quantum computing is currently entering an era of real world application development. However, an example of a real world application exceeding the capability of classical computing methods still remains elusive. Here we present our work on developing one of the first such applications by simulating an experiment, which exhibits quantum tunneling between different electronic configurations. The material system we deal with is 1T-TaS2 in a metastable state, where electrons crystallize into a mosaic of lattices separated by domain walls. We developed a strongly correlated model that is able to describe the configurational ordering of electrons. A quantum simulation at the required scale is currently not possible using classical methods, which motivates the use of the D-Wave’s 2000Q quantum annealer. Due to the complexity of our model, D-Wave’s machine is also not able to cope with the required scale of the simulation, as is. Therefore, we employed a machine learning algorithm in order to boost the performance of D-Wave’s quantum annealer for our specific purpose.
