LIMA – “Liquid Magnets: fundamental studies of ferromagnetic order in liquids”

Abstract:

In this seminar I aim to provide an overall image of our planned activities for the next 3 years within the ARRS project LIMA, recently granted. It was recently shown that suspensions of scandium substituted barium hexaferrite nanoparticles in n-butanol show not only nematic ordering, but also spontaneous ferromagnetic fluid ordering. Such liquid magnets have opened up the possibility to experimentally study a completely new set of fundamental physical phenomena lying between our understanding of solid magnets and paramagnetic ferrofluids.

In LIMA we aim to conduct a fundamental and through study of these novel materials: from material synthesis and design to formation and stability of magnetic domains together dynamics and magnetic signal propagation.
